Rat sports are a fast-growing canine activity designed to tap into your dog’s natural hunting instincts in a fun, safe, and confidence-building way. Dogs navigate a course filled with hay, objects, and obstacles, searching for safely contained rats. The goal is simple: let dogs do what they love—use their noses—while strengthening teamwork, problem-solving, and communication between dog and handler.
Rat sports are open to dogs of all breeds, sizes, ages, and experience levels. Whether you want a fun enrichment activity or hope to compete at trials, rat sports offer an exciting, supportive way for dogs to build confidence, drive, and focus.
Dogs have always been a major part of my life, and for the past 15 years I’ve been deeply involved in dog sports. I’ve competed in ratting, agility, scent detection, sprinter, chase ability, and dock diving, traveling throughout Canada and the United States to participate at Regional and National levels.
Working with a wide range of breeds, personalities, and training needs has given me a strong foundation that I bring to every lesson, class, and workshop I teach. I genuinely love helping dogs and their handlers discover what they’re capable of.
My journey into rat sports began in 2021 when I entered my Boston Terrier, Sophie-Lulu, into our first Rats! Canada workshop. Watching her natural enthusiasm for the sport sparked something in me, and it didn’t take long before I was fully committed to learning everything I could. That excitement grew into a passion that pushed me to become more involved.
In 2023, I began teaching and judging, and in 2024 I traveled to Massachusetts to compete in Happy Ratters. That trip gave me the opportunity to meet the founder and experience a new style of games, which I was excited to bring back to Atlantic Canada. I am now a junior judge with Rats! Canada and the Senior Canadian judge for Happy Ratters.
I currently compete with my Boston Terrier, Zing, my French Bulldog, Hampton, and my Border Collie, Hiro. Each one continues to teach me about teamwork, communication, and the true joy of dog sports. Sharing that passion with others—whether in classes, workshops, or the ring—is one of my favourite parts of what I do.
